Bluesman Eric ‘Guitar’ Davis, son of Chicago blues drummer Bobby ‘Top Hat’ Davis, was killed early on December 19th in a double-shooting in Chicago’s South Side. He was aged 41.
Davis was found behind the wheel of a car and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:07 a.m., the Chicago Tribune reports. He had spent the evening at Kingston Mines blues club in Lincoln Park in the hours before the shooting.
Davis’ talents were fostered by his father, who played with Ray Charles and Muddy Waters. Eric Davis started out as a drummer playing in Chicago’s blues clubs, including the Checkerboard Lounge and Theresa’s Lounge. He was aged just ten when he played behind Junior Wells, Lefty Dizz, Buddy Guy and B.B. Odom.
Davis played lead guitar and sang for the band Eric Guitar Davis and the Troublemakers, and he’d recently landed a record deal with Delmark Records.
No arrests have yet been made.
